How to Host the DrawRoom's Conversation Mode
The DrawRoom's Conversation Mode is perfect for conversation starters, card talks, and weekend chats. Below is a video that walks you through the set up process and activity with your students.
1. Select DrawRoom from the top menu bar and then select Conversation Mode.
2. Adjust the activity settings and then select Start DrawRoom.A. Require Student Login
Only enable this option if students have Charlala accounts. This setting will only allow students with Charlala accounts linked to your teacher account to join the activity. This setting cannot be changed later.
B. Lock to Specific Class
This option is only available if require student login is enabled. This setting will only allow students enrolled in the selected class to join the activity. This setting cannot be changed later.
C. Allow Stickers
This setting allows students to add emojis and pre-selected stickers to their drawing canvas. Stickers help students quickly create drawings and make the activity more enjoyable for those that are "artistically challenged."
D. Music
If selected, the activity is accompanied with music when appropriate (during the waiting room and drawing times). This setting can be changed later.
E. Draw Timer
This setting projects a countdown timer when students are drawing to help pace the activity. The activity does not automatically advance when the timer reaches 0. The teacher manually advances to the next step, so additional time can be added if necessary. This setting can be changed later.
3. Direct students to visit charlala.com/draw and enter the room code at the top of your screen.
4. As students join the activity, their names will appear. You may hover and click on a name to remove a student from the activity. After all students are logged in, you may optionally lock the DrawRoom to prevent additional students from joining. Select Start in the top right when ready.
5. Provide students with a drawing prompt or question aloud in class or written in the chat (e.g., How are you doing today?). After all student drawings have appeared or time has run out, select End Drawing in the top right to move forward in the activity.
6. This is the core of the activity. Review student responses and provide comprehensible input in the target language. Frequently refer back to the original prompt and reference student drawings to make the conversation comprehensible.
7. Identify up to 5 finalists, drawings that you feel best responded to the original question/prompt or drawings that will guide the next part of the conversation. Select the Star below the desired drawing to make it a finalist. You may also skip this step by selecting Skip Voting in the top right.A. Reveal Eye
Show the artist/student's name.
B. Start
Select this drawing as a finalist.
C. Enlarge Square
Enlarge the drawing for a more in-depth conversation.
D. Delete
Delete the drawing because it is inappropriate or distracting.
E. Download
Download the drawing for future activities.
8. After all finalist drawings are selected, select Start Voting in the top right.
9. You may optionally give students a follow-up question/prompt to direct their voting. E.g. Pretend you are going to math class after this. How would you feel? After all student votes are in (you van verify in the top left corner), select End Voting in the top right.
10. Student drawings that receive the most votes are displayed at the top. Students are awarded an Art Bonus that is calculated using the number of votes their drawing received. The Guess Bonus is awarded to students that correctly voted for 1st-3rd place drawings (calculated using the time spent voting and the final place of their drawing vote). Select Start Drawing to continue with conversation with additional prompts (repeat steps 5-9). Select the grey Fast Forward button to end the activity.
11. After ending the activity, you may review the leaderboard, view/download masterpieces or any drawing, or return to your account dashboard.A. Leaderboard
The leaderboard displays three leaderboards. The digital artist award is based on how many votes the students' artwork received, the art curator award is based on correctly selecting the winning masterpieces, and the overall results are a combination of both awards.
B. Masterpieces
View and download the winning masterpieces for future conversations and activities.
C. All Drawings
View and download any drawing from the activity for future conversations and activities.
D. Return to Account
Return to your Charlala account if you want to host another activity in the DrawRoom.
